This article describes one of many techniques developed by Adventures in Spiritual Living to encourage and support personal spiritual experience. It can be used by individuals or enjoyed as a group activity and sharing.
Description
The Urantia Book encourages our efforts to communicate with our inner spirit and recommends a dialogue with an imaginary alter ego as the most effective technique. (Paper 91, Section 3, Paragraph 7) It also tells us to recognize that this is a “talk face to face, as it were, with a real and genuine alter ego” — our inner spirit. So, I invite you to imagine a conversation between you and your inner spirit. Even though much of what is communicated to you will lie beyond your consciousness (in your super-conscious), nevertheless, every honest attempt to communicate with your inner spirit meets with certain success.
The following few minutes will be for you to spend with your inner spirit.
Now it is time to go within for your dialog with your inner spirit.
Relax your body and your mind. Inhale deeply and slowly. As you exhale slowly and fully, feel your body and your mind relax. Feel the calmness. Breathe again and then again. Each time you exhale, sense the increasing relaxation and calm.
Go deep within yourself. You will be at a level of mind where you are relaxed, but alert.
This is your place to commune with your divine inner spirit.
This is where you will be able to sense most easily your spirit’s presence.
Wait in silent receptivity […pause…]
Open yourself for a sense of your inner spirit’s presence. […pause…]
Your inner spirit is directly in front of you. You are face to face. [… pause…]
Imagine a wonderful time together. Engage in relaxed sensing , thinking, and feeling and in an exchange of impressions and thoughts.
I have provided a list of questions you might want to discuss during your dialogue with your inner spirit. These are suggestions only. Feel free to discuss anything you wish with your inner spirit. Be receptive. Perhaps your inner spirit has a topic to suggest.
Questions for Discussion with Your Divine Inner Spirit
- What is self-mastery? How is it important? It sounds like hard work. How is self-mastery a foundation for loving treatment of others and for my character development? Why should I want self-mastery enough to work for it?
- Our culture encourages me to spend too much time on mere trifles of living and not adequately to focus on the essential realities of everlasting importance – attunement to you. What are the “mere trifles of living”? Do I have to make many changes in my life? How can I get motivated enough to make time in my busy life for seeking attunement with you? Must I eliminate all the trifles?
- What I am today is not so important as what I am becoming day by day. What am I becoming? Do I guide my becoming by my decisions? How can I focus on the right goals and decisions?
